Rapid plasma reagin (RPR) is a test used to screen for syphilis. Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by bacteria. Untreated, there is a high risk of passing syphilis to a baby during pregnancy. It can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, the baby’s death shortly after birth, or serious health problems in the baby within a few weeks of birth. The good news is that it is curable with antibiotics to avoid problems during pregnancy.
