Insulin

Insulin is a hormone that helps move glucose from the blood into the cells. It thereby ensures that the cells are supplied with sufficient energy. This is particularly important with regard to female fertility: a healthy sugar metabolism is necessary for egg maturation and the growth of the embryo, as the cells divide rapidly and require a lot of energy. In the case of insulin resistance and, subsequently, diabetes, this process is disturbed: the body’s cells no longer respond adequately to insulin signals. As a consequence, the body produces more male sex hormones, which disrupts the cycle and egg maturation.
Insulin and glucose are used to calculate the so-called HOMA index. This biomarker helps determine if insulin resistance may be present.
