The cytomegalovirus, CMV for short, causes the viral disease cytomegaly. In many cases, the disease doesn’t cause strong symptoms or feels like a mild flu. But if someone gets infected while pregnant, it can cause organ damage and neurological developmental difficulties in the baby. It’s most dangerous to get infected during the first trimester of pregnancy.
